Memorizing the Holy Quran

9 Dec 2019

{Indeed, it is We who have sent down the Quran, and surely, We will guard it} Surah Al-Hajar, verse (9)

God has promised to guard the Holy Quran against corruption, distortion, falsifying or altering of any of its words that were revealed in plain Arabic to the prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him) through the angel Gabriel (Jibril).

The Quran was revealed gradually, so that people could more easily memorize it. The Holy Quran is the last book revealed by Almighty Allah (God) to the final Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him). Since each messenger was supported with miracles from God, the Holy Quran is consider to be the most important miracle of Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him), who was illiterate.

Writing the Holy Quran
When the verses of the Quran were revealed, the companions of the Prophet were the first to learn them by heart and practice their teachings. The companions are the ones who helped to transmit the Holy Quran to the followers who came after them, despite the fear of Omar bin al-Khattab that the companions might get killed or die and the Quran would fade away. Thus, Muslims began to collect all the verses they wrote during the presence of the Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him). Some of these verses were written on paper, some were written on palm tree leaves and some were engraved on rocks. When the Quran was collected and combined, the written verses were matched against the verses memorized by the companions. Then, a copy of a written Quran was handed to Amir al-Mu’minin the Commander of the Faithful.

The Holy Quran today
With the increasing need throughout the Islamic world for copies of the Holy Quran and its translation into different languages, while maintaining its meaning, teachings and tolerant instructions, Saudi Arabia launched a huge Islamic project for printing the Holy Quran in various languages to be distributed to Muslims around the world. This is what the King Fahd Complex for Printing the Holy Quran is actually doing in Madinah. The King Fahd Complex employs 1100 Muslim scholars, professors, technicians and administrators to ensure that every single word is included in the verses of the Holy Quran, all Islamic decoration and pages of the Holy Book are completely accurate and in utmost perfection, starting with the verses being handwritten by the calligrapher Osman Taha, to the printing process in separate fascicles and cover designs that decorate the Holy Quran. The auditing process including reviewing, binding and packaging of the Holy Book is continued on the Quality Assurance department, which is run by 380 employees.
