Ramadan Around the World

7 May 2019

When we hear the word ‘Ramadan,’ we are immediately taken back to the comfort and tranquility we experience during the holy month. No matter where we are, the positive Ramadan atmosphere never changes and the passion for the holy month is the same with every Muslim on earth. Learn more about Ramadan celebrations around the world with Shaza Makkah.

Egypt was the First to Celebrate with Lanterns
Egypt was the first country to decorate its streets with lanterns to celebrate Ramadan, and it was the first to invent the character of the mesaharati who roams through the neighborhood with a drum to remind people to eat suhoor and pray Tahajjud. What distinguishes Ramadan in Egypt are the Ramadan tents and Rahman tables, which welcome everyone with fava beans, a staple in any Egyptian iftar or suhoor, along with Ramadan beverages such as carob and tamarind

Awashir Mabrooka from Morocco
The people of Morocco congratulate each other on the occasion of the holy month by saying ‘Awashir Mabrooka,’ meaning the first ten days, the middle ten days, and the last ten days. They consider Ramadan to be a month of blessing and gathering, so Moroccan families gather around the iftar table in Ramadan and make sure to increase family visits in the holy month. The Moroccan iftar table serves harira soup, in addition to Moroccan Ramadan desserts such as chebakia, baghrir, and sufoof.

Ramadan is the Month of Lights in Turkey
Over the course of five centuries, Istanbul has been the capital of the Islamic Caliphate, which is why Islamic traditions and customs are widespread across the country until today, as many Turks have adopted the Islamic faith. They celebrate Ramadan by decorating mosques with spectacular lighting that connects minarets together. Using lamps, the lights illuminate words such as Bismillah, Allah, Mohammed, Ya Ramadan, and other phrases you can see from afar.

Ramadan and Indonesian Mosques
Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in terms of Muslim population, and you’ll immediately notice the great change in their daily routines once Ramadan starts. Mosques are open all day and organize Zikr and Quran readings as well as Islam lessons that are held on an almost continuous basis throughout the month. The Muslim family makes sure to encourage all its members to join these activities in the mosque, starting with the Taraweeh and Tahajud prayers.

Saudi Arabia was the First Ramadan Host
Since it embraces the two Holy Mosques, the Kingdom’s preparations for Ramadan are one of the largest in terms of planning and implementation; the Kingdom welcomes more than one million pilgrims in Ramadan, so the streets and the Grand Mosque are prepared to host these crowds in their second home. State and private companies are always ready to provide the best services, which is why Shaza Makkah ensures that the staff working at the main reception desk are multilingual to serve guests in their mother tongue. In addition, Midan Restaurant offers a wide variety of international dishes from your country, and the hotel is filled with Ramadan decorations to celebrate your arrival in the holy city.
